A facilitated writers’ group

Everyone has a story to tell. But writing honestly can be scary and it’s easy to get stuck. Most people need support to sustain writing of any length.

If you are doing life-writing, realist fiction or anything that needs a ‘good story’, come along to The Writing Gym. It’s a safe, collaborative environment that offers more support than a regular writers’ group. Some of the issues we deal with regularly include:

  • What will people say? Dealing with blocks
  • Identifying the story you want to tell
  • Creating a solid story structure for a gripping read
  • Sharpening characterisation, setting and emotional impact
  • Using dialogue to move your plot forward
  • Strategies to keep you on track to finish your draft
  • Potential outlets to share your work

2.30pm – 4.30pm

The Writing Gym has given me the confidence to begin a memoir that I’ve been wanting to write for many years. The feedback from other students is invaluable, giving me a fresh perspective on stories I know well. Madeline is a supportive teacher who offers many suggestions and resources from the world of memoir-writing.
